Sohile Ali
Sohile Ali, a senior in the intelligent systems engineering program at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, has been awarded the prestigious Kate Hevner Mueller Award from Indiana University.
Ali, who is part of the first class to earn their bachelor’s degree in ISE at Luddy, was honored for his proven leadership both inside and outside of the classroom, and for improving the IU community through his presence. The award, which has been handed out since 2013, honors a limited number of IU students annually.
“Receiving the Kate Hevner Mueller Award is a great honor and one that reminds me of how fortunate I have been to serve IU and the student community,” Ali said. “I have received so much from all of the different organizations and clubs I have joined, and each one has shaped my academic and professional career. As a Bloomington native, IU has always been a part of my life, and leaving any sort of impact means a lot to me.”
Besides pursuing his bachelor’s degree in intelligent systems engineering with a concentration on cyber-physical systems, Ali has been a resident assistant at the Forest Residence Center since 2017 and a multimedia intern in the Office of the Provost since 2018. He also served as vice president of the INgineering Club at the Luddy School from 2017-18 and was the vice president of marketing for the Indiana Memorial Union Board in 2019.
“Whether it's being a guide and resource for my residents in Forest or helping tell IU student stories through the Provost’s Office, I am proud to give back to my university,” Ali said. “I enjoy sharing my love of IU with others. I am always excited to inform prospective students and their parents about the intelligent systems engineering program during Luddy Connect Days. It also was a great pleasure to be the work for the IMU board. Leading the marketing efforts for some of the largest events at IU, such as “An Evening with Anderson Cooper” and the 2019 Welcome Week Block Party, gave me an amazing opportunity to experience first-hand all of the work that goes into events like these. I do my best to share my enthusiasm for IU in all of these involvements.”
The award honors Kate Hevner Mueller, who served IU as Dean of Women, Senior Counselor for Women, and Professor of Education from 1937-1969. Mueller was a national pioneer for women professionals and developed the Master’s Program in College Student Personnel (Higher Education and Student Affairs) at Indiana University in the early 1950s.
“The Luddy School takes great pride in the leadership skills of its students, and it’s fantastic to see those students recognized by the IU community at large,” said Dennis Groth, interim dean of the Luddy School. “Sohile’s leadership as part of the ISE program and in his various roles sets a strong example for those around him, and he couldn’t be more deserving of the honor.”
