Katie Siek
Katie Siek, a professor and chair of the Department of Informatics at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, has been elected to the board of directors of the Computer Research Association.
Siek was named a member of the CRA’s Computing Community Consortium in July 2019, and she earned a Computing Research Association for Women Anita Borg Early Career Award in 2012. As a board member, she aims to help CRA continue their work to diversify computing; synthesize best practices for internal and external academic relations; provide support for junior scholars in computing; and inform policy makers and society about the impact of computing.
“I’m incredibly honored to have the opportunity to continue serving the computing community with the CRA,” Siek said. “The CRA represents more than 200 North American computing departments, labs, and professional organizations in academia, industry, and government. As a professor and chair in an informatics department, I appreciate the computing community’s interest in broadening the scope of computing for our discipline and society.”
Siek earned her M.S. (2004) and Ph.D. (2006) in computer science from IU, and she joined the Luddy School as a faculty member in 2013. Her primary research interests are in human computer interaction, health informatics, and ubiquitous computing. More specifically, she is interested in how sociotechnical interventions affect personal health and well-being. Her research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the National Science Foundation including a five-year NSF CAREER award.
Siek will join the CRA board for a three-year term July 1.
"The world-class faculty at the Luddy School shapes the future of technology every day, both on and off the IU campus," said Dennis Groth, interim dean of the Luddy School. “This is a richly deserved honor for Katie, and her passion for computing and creating a deeper and wider impact for technology on the world makes her the perfect addition to the CRA board.”
