This set of images was developed
by me during my first year of teaching phonetics (at Brooklyn College
in 1975). Their purpose is to help you think about the coordination and
overlap of speech gestures. Number 1 shows the tongue body
motions in two dimensions (high-low and front-back). Number 2
shows glottal aperture during breathing, the production of voicing and
for a glottal stop. The general rule is that articulators are shown
down for open and up for closed. Number 3 shows glottal aperture,
velum aperture and the tongue tip (or apex) in parallel during
production of the words shown in transcription above. Page 2
shows more examples and page 3 displays a summary of the phonetic
theory employed. Page 4 contains some examples for you to practice with.
